At least six people were killed and more than 80 injured when a bomb exploded close to the entrance of a shopping mall in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

The rush-hour attack, one of the worst in the city for a decade and blamed by security sources on Kurdish separatists, killed five Turks and a Pakistani national, according to officials.

The front of the five-storey Anafartalar shopping mall in the historic centre was badly damaged by the explosion. Unconfirmed reports last night suggested an explosive device was left at a bus stop close to the busy centre in the Ulus district.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, although police were holding seven people in connection with the blast last night.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who visited the scene shortly after the bombing, said: "We have seen a vicious, ruthless terror attack at Ankara's busiest time. Is it a suicide bomber or a parcel bomb? Technical teams are working on this. We have always said terror can strike anyone, anywhere. Although we have taken every precaution, we have experienced this incident." Mayor Melih Gokcek said: "This is the most horrific scene I have ever seen. It gives me great grief."

Officials said four Turks and one Pakistani were killed instantly by the explosion, while another Turkish person died shortly after arriving at hospital.

Recep Akdag, the health minister, said more than 80 people were injured, although it was not stated how many were in a serious condition. Six other Pakistanis, visiting a defence industry fair organised by the Turkish armed forces, were also wounded. Witnesses described seeing mutilated bodies lying near the entrance of the mall.

"We were cleaning the windows when the pressure from the blast pushed us to the ground. Everything was covered in dust. I could only hear people screaming," said Murat Coskun, who owns a nearby mobile phone shop. Another witness, Mehmet Yilmaz, said he saw someone on fire and tried to put out the flames by covering him with rugs.

Analysts said the attack was almost certain to raise tensions ahead of a general election in July, a contest fraught with strain between Turkey's secularist elite, the ruling Islamist-rooted AK party and Kurdish factions who accuse the government of sidelining their candidates.

Turkey is in a political trouble. Kemalists nationalists are loosing the control over the country. Islamists achieved to change the Constitution and now for the first time turks will elect their president directly.
If islamists take the presidential position then they will be able to get control over the Army , and then for the first time since 1920-s Kemalists will loose control over army.

Now Kemalists are trying to redirect the attention to the kurdish issue. A big armed forces are concentrated on the boarder of Iraq and ready to invade Kurdistan in Northern Iraq.

I ran into this article on groong which claimed that it's better for Armenia to deal with a secular Turkey rather than an Islamic one. I don't agree with this point.

Here is part of the article:

FOR ARMENIA IT IS MORE PREFERABLE TO DEAL WITH THE SECULAR TURKEY RATHER THAN WITH THE ISLAMIC ONE

PanARMENIAN.Net

The Trabzon's example, which has become the center of attention of
almost all radical Islamic groupings, may attract other provinces
as well.

On July 22 special parliamentary elections are planned to be held
in Turkey. The elections may be crucial in the modern history of
the country; the 70 year-old secular life of the country may come
to an end and the country may revert to its Islamic origins. This
may noticeably limit the power the General Staff possesses, which
according to the Constitution may bring the government down, in case
"it puts the country's national security under risk".

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ In his time Mustafa Kemal Ataturk introduced this
article in the Constitution for he, being a military man and "Union and
Progress" party member before that, knew well how uncontrollable the
civil government may be. The Armenian, Greek, and Assyrian Genocides
may serve as vivid examples of the above mentioned. It is not that
the founder of the Turkish Republic treated badly those not being of
Turkish origin; just he thought that Turkey was the Turks' country,
all the others had only a right to survive....

I think it would be better for us if the islamists in Turkey gained more control. The kemalists are our main enemies and they are supported by the USA and Israel. The grey wolves are part of these kemalists. If Turkey becomes an islamic country this will directly weaken the army and it won't take long before Turkey will fall apart.

I also read this article on groong coming from AZG:

ERDOGAN'S "JUSTICE AND PROSPERITY" PARTY CALLED "ARMENIANS' MARIONETTE" BY THE GRAY WOLVES
By Hakob Chakrian

AZG Armenian Daily

Political Crisis in Turkey

After demonstrations in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir the opposition to
Prime Minister Erdogan's "Justice and Prosperity" party organized
a protest action also in Samsun. The public television of turkey
announced that this was the last demonstration dedicated to protection
of the "secular and republican order in Turkey". Evidently, the
opposition came to conclusion that its demonstrations serve rather
to the benefit of the ruler party than its defamation.

This fact increases "Justice and Prosperity" party's chances of
coming to absolute power after the parliamentary elections on July
22. That is why the army, the presidential cabinet and social-political
organizations are mobilizing their forces to make a fight against the
ruling party. Kemalist unions are calling upon the army to bring down
the authorities, being supported by a group of political parties led
by the "National-Republican Party", while the army prefers opposing
Erdogan by uniting the opposition.....

I agree with the article written on AZG but I would like to know your opinion on this matter.

Will it be better for Armenia to deal with a secular/kemalist Turkey or with an islamic one?

by the "National-Republican Party", while the army prefers opposing

The political elite is confused a lot by all this mess. The cause
of this confusion is surely not the threat against secularity and
democracy in Turkey, but rather the efforts to convince the electors
that the threat is imposed by the "Justice and Prosperity" party
itself. The motivation of those efforts is quite clear - the growing
power of the "Justice and Prosperity" party is reducing the privileges
of the political elite (mostly adherent to the army), it is hindering
the army from preserving its influence on the political life of the
country and is striking a serious blow to the obscure powers which
work under the cover of Kemalistic nationalism.

It is noteworthy that the aforementioned "obscure powers", together
with the army, are considerably supported by the Jewish organizations
of the USA and by the neo-conservators supervised from Israel, who are
giving international implication to the hysteria about Erdogan and his
fellows. The "Grey Wolves" organization is in close cooperation both
with Israeli and American secret services. It is rather interesting
that "Eni Cag", the Grey Wolves' newspaper has called Erdogan's
"Justice and Prosperity" party "the marionettes of the Armenians".

Here is translation of a part from the article by Ozcan Eniceri
published in "Eni Cag", No. 17, May 2007.

"The government invited all Armenians in Armenia, Europe and USA who
were negatively disposed to Turkey to the funeral of Hrant Dink. It's
wrong to consider this invitation as a humane gesture. The victim of
the crime was a Turkish citizen and could have no connection neither
with Armenia nor with Diaspora.

In response to this step of Turkey, Armenia promoted the formula on
"the genocide" submitted to the US Senate as well as the anti-Turkish
developments. After the funeral, the government rushed to finish the
reconstruction of Akdamar Armenian church. Though there are hundreds,
thousands of historical monuments that need to be reconstructed,
the preference was given to the Armenian church.

Perhaps, "Justice and Prosperity" party tries to conduct the policy of
"taking a step forward" in case of not only Cyprus but also that of
Armenia, as well.

The same unilateral approaches are applied in the diplomatic circles
to Armenia. While, Abdullah Gyul stated in the interview to "the
Washington times" that "Turkey looks forward to receiving the consent
of Armenia for shaping of a joint commission," the Armenian side
spared no efforts that the bill on the punishment for the denial of
the so-called genocide would be adopted at the French Senate.

The Turkish government allowed around 70 thousand Armenian citizens
to enter our country and work here, while Armenia prohibits a Turkish
observer from OSCE to participate in the parliamentary elections
on may 12 in Armenia. Moreover, Turkey gives 12 balls to Armenia in
"Eurovision," while Armenia responses this step by giving no scores
to Turkey.

It's obvious that Armenia and its Diaspora are deeply engaged in
any conspiracy against Turkey. We should response Armenia by its own
methods. One should speak an understandable tongue with Armenia. The
history proves that Armenia understands the language of Kyazim
Karabekir and this language should be used against Armenia beginning
from the very Karabakh."

may serve as vivid examples of the above mentioned. It is not that
the founder of the Turkish Republic treated badly those not being of
Turkish origin; just he thought that Turkey was the Turks' country,
all the others had only a right to survive.

However, for Armenia it is more preferable to deal with the secular
Turkey rather than with the Islamic one. The Islamists, who at
present act only time after time, may indeed begin some serious actions
against the Christian population of the country. The Trabzon's example,
which has become the center of attention of almost all radical Islamic
groupings, may attract other provinces as well. The whole world already
knows what outcome it may have for the Armenians, Greeks and for the
few Catholic missioners.

The election campaign in Turkey has already launched and there have
already been some surprises. Verkin Arioba who has Armenian origins
is going to struggle for Turkish parliamentarian mandate in the. She
has turned to the ruling "Justice and Development" party with the
corresponding announcement and at the moment is expecting a final
decision about including her name in the electoral list. As the
Turkish Daily News announces in case Verkin Arioba is included in
the electoral list she will become the first candidate for a deputy
sit in the Turkish Parliament having Armenian origins since 1980. As
Arioba announced, in case she is elected she will continue working
on the resolution of the conflict between Armenia and Turkey, as
well as county's integration into EU. Answering the questions about
the Armenian Genocide, Verkin Arioba announced, "It is a historical
issue. Discussing this issue every day will have a rather harmful
effect on its development. Let's look ahead, and not back. Verkin
Arioba's father is descendent from the Kasabian family, and was one
of the first businessmen in Turkey. Verkin Arioba announced that her
family hasn't lost anyone during "the resettlement of 1915-1919". "I
lost relatives during the war for independence, but not during the
resettlement," she said. "Being an Armenian I will be able to protect
Turkey's right in EU more efficiently. The fact that I have Armenian
origins is a great advantage for me in elections," stated Arioba. She
has rather realistic chances if we take into account that after Hrant
Dink's murder Turkey has announced more then once that Armenians are
well treated in Turkey. Perhaps the 12 points that Turkey gave to
Armenia at the "Eurovision Song Contest" is just one more "evidence"
that speaks for the above mentioned. Meanwhile it is also considered a
political step. "We are neighbors and must be friends too. This must
show what important role music, friendship and art play," announced
Turkish music critic Sezen Cumhur Onal. He assures that the Turkish
votes given to the Armenian singer at the "Eurovision Song Contest"
pursued political interests.

Keeping close to our main point, it should be mentioned that Verkin
Arioba is famous for her criticism about Nobel Prize laureate Orhan
Pamuk and the editor-in-chief of "Agos" Hrant Dink, killed on January
19, 2007 in Istanbul. If the way to the Parliament demands rejection
of one's own origins, then everything is all right. If there is any
pressure displayed, then Hrant Dink was right saying, "In Istanbul
we live like Armenians for 364 days, and only one day a year, that
is on April 24, we must forget that we are Armenian." According to
the editor-in-chief of "Zhamanak" Ara Kochunyan, being Armenian in
Istanbul is not easy. "This is connected with self-consciousness. Each
of us is a citizen of the Turkish Republic with the Armenian origins
and many of us belong to the Armenian Apostolic Church.

And we like jugglers must not let any of these three balls down;
one of which will always be in the air, and the other two, in our
hands. An Armenian in Istanbul is trying to stay as calm as possible,
not to get any extra attention and be discriminated, yet there are
many different ways of oppressing national minorities in Turkey. The
Turkish Republic is founded on the bases of multinational empire and
often speaks of itself as of an assignee of the Empire. What I want
to mention is, that today the country is secular, but there is the
conception of "non-Islamic citizens of the country", Kochunyan says.

It is very difficult to work one's way up to the Parliament in such
conditions, but it is not impossible. Simply Turkey will have one
more trump card to display in front of EU, and as usual that trump
card will be provided by Armenia...

It would be to Armenia's advantage if the kemalists were overthrown by islamic groups. As you stated Lernakan, turkey will recieve less support from outside powers if it were to become more islamic, yet they will still be anti-Armenian no matter what. I will be monitoring the developments in turkish politics and foreign affairs very closely for the next few months.

Agree, they will be anti-Armenian no matter what but the islamists are less nationalist than the kemalists. For the kemalists, the turkish people come before anything and for the islamists the koran is the most important thing in their lives.

The important thing to remember is that whether the islamic forces gain power in turkey or the kemalists keep it, division has already been sown into turkish society and any change of power or lack there of, will only deepen the divide. Like I said, it should be an interesting summer.

There has always been division between islamists and kemalists. The kemalists have tried to stay in power and oppress the islamists ever since the founding of the turkish republic. A big percentage of the turkish diaspora here in Europe consists of islamists and they hate ataturk and are far less nationalist than the kemalists. The difference is that the islamists have gained power these last few years. If it was up to the population secularity would have been thrown in the garbage and sharia would be installed because mosts turks are islamists. It is just the urban people that are kemalists and also the army. I hope there will be a big clash between these two and that the kurds join this fight. Turkey will fall sooner or later...

I agree with you that kemalists are our main ennemies. So islamists are better option. Islamists into power will bring some kind of isolation. Also islamists are interestingly more tolerant toward national identity of ethnic minority.

But we should not have illusion. Turkish identity has shown very great attitude to change , so there are people there for whom islam is instrumental and lower than turkishness, even if they use islam rhetoric.

In overall the fall of kemalism and the cult of Ataturk is a good thing for us.

IN TURKEY, CONSPIRACY THEORIES ACTUALLY HOLD, BECAUSE... (1)
By Ekrem Dumanli

Today's Zaman, Turkey
May 29 2007

Conspiracy theories receive press in every country. However, in
Turkey they receive more press, are more widespread and are actually
more believable.

To understand the reasons for this is to take a step toward
understanding politics in Turkey because the scenarios in this
country, just as they are the fruits of imagination, are also based
on reality. For this reason, they are also believable.

During the period leading to the 1960 military coup, there were
some unbelievably strong allegations at hand. One example of such
allegations was the claim that leftist youths had been captured
by police and thrown into meat grinders. These allegations were a
huge news item for days. Everyone who heard these allegations was
completely horrified. But in reality, the actual names of these
"revolutionary youths torn apart in meat grinders" were not known,
nor could anyone say where this terrible event had taken place.

Nor could anyone have known these things because they were lies. This
made-up news originated from some center, serving to alter the
atmosphere in the country. Then when the conditions were ripe, it
was time for the military coup to take place. After the 1960 military
coup, the Turkish public had been strongly affected by this type of
false news story.

Perhaps one of the most striking examples of this phenomenon was
prior to the 1980 coup. Towards the end of the 1970s, Turkey was
divided along lines of left and right. It was not possible to remain
neutral or not being decisively on the right or on the left. Each side
leveled accusations of treason at the other. When the armed struggles
began, the left claimed it wanted to save the country from the fascist
right. And the right believed it was protecting the country from the
threat of communism.

There were armed clashes, bombings and assassinations. So much so
that at the beginning of the 1980s, 5,000 of the nation's youth had
already been killed, and the daily average death toll from conflict
had risen to 30. And in response to critical questions over why the
military had "waited for so many people to die," coup leader Gen.

Kenan Evren replied with, "We waited for the conditions to be met."

Thus on Sept. 12, 1980, the military, with Gen. Evren at its helm,
took control of the country. Labor strikes, student protests,
assassinations, bombings; everything, yes everything, came to a
halt overnight. Years later, Suleyman Demirel, who had been prime
minister during that period, asked, "With 30 people dying every day
up until Sept. 11, 1980, how was it that on the morning of Sept. 13,
everything stopped in one moment?"

Demirel was right to ask this. The many illegal organizations and
groups, and the tens of thousands of militants, had their fighting
cut short overnight, even though the government at the time gave the
military very great power and authority before the coup.

What, then, was the authority they possessed that was not being used
that brought the need for a coup to the forefront? This was a question
debated for years in the Turkish public, and in the end, the following
conclusion was reached: In the period before the 1980 military coup,
the powers controlling the right and the left were coming from the
same point. In the deadly acts each side was launching against the
other, people were being guided from the same center. And the naive
youth jumping into the scenario were unaware that they were simply
pawns in the game. During the 1970s, former Prime Minister Bulent
Ecevit used to talk about an organization called "Gladio." Ecevit,
whose own life was the target of assassination attempts many times,
could never prove the existence of this "Gladio" group. But the
majority of people in Turkey did believe his claims to be true.

Later, on Nov. 3, 1996, there was an odd traffic accident that took
place in Turkey, and for many Turks, this accident came to represent a
turning point. The car involved in the notorious accident in Susurluk
contained a former leader from the right wing sought all over the world
(Abdullah Catlý), one top-level police official (Huseyin Kocadað)
and a parliamentary deputy (Sedat Bucak).

It was said that there was strong evidence that Catlý had been sent
by the state abroad to incapacitate Armenian terrorists operating
internationally. This was the same person who, before 1980, had been
involved in bloody protests and who had been accused personally of
being the cause for the deaths of so many leftist youth in Turkey.

Meanwhile, Police Chief Huseyin Kocadað, who died in the Susurluk
accident, was known for his identity as a leftist and an Alevi. Thus
the people of Turkey were shocked when a famous right-wing terrorist
and a renowned leftist police commander were revealed to have been
in the same car. The weapons present in the car, the fact that the
car itself belonged to a deputy who was also the family head of an
enormous clan from the Turkish East, the fact that an unknown woman
was also present in the car... Everything turned in one moment into
a mysterious puzzle and one which still hasn't been solved.

Deputy chief of the Turkish Police Intelligence Bureau at the time,
Hanefi Avcý, talked during a live television program of a "gladio" that
had settled itself into the workings of the government. At that time,
then-general Veli Kucuk blamed Intelligence Bureau Chief Mehmet Eymur
and current DYP leader Mehmet Aðar. According to Avcý, the structure
that had rooted itself in the government was a triangle consisting of
the military, police and politics. For saying these words, Avcý was
arrested, but then later returned to his post, where he carries on
to this day. But the curtains of secrecy have never lifted on this
event because the people named in the Susurluk accident never came
to court to give their testimonies.

There have, however, been frequent reminders of the gladio organization
that former Prime Minister Ecevit used to mention so often because
the phenomenon of unsolved murders has continued on while different
groups in society become hostile to one another.

Because of psychological wartime techniques, the people themselves
have experienced polarization.

Suspicion in Turkey over gladios and gangs has carried on until
today. And there are connections between some of the events we
see occurring today and some of the secret structures within the
government.

And with no transparency being endowed on any of these suspicions,
every event that takes place in Turkey winds up with a question mark
hanging over it. Let me leave the examination of the events we see
unfolding in Turkey for the next column.

ERDOGHAN'S JUSTICE AND DEVELOPMENT PARTY'S POPULARITY INCREASES IN TURKEY
By Hakob Chakrian

AZG Armenian Daily
06/06/2007

It's a pledge of success in the coming parliamentary elections
in Turkey

According to the Gallup poll of Seljuk University in Konya Erdoghan's
Justice and Development party's popularity increases in Turkey. The
Gallup poll was conducted in 40 states of Turkey, among 10.951 people.

As the presidential elections of Turkey are to hold on June 22 together
with the premature parliamentary elections, the Gallup poll contains
statistics of both of them.

According to "Vatan" daily 70 % of questioned agreed to elect the
president by popular vote, 22,5 % found appropriate for "Mejlis"
to elect the President, and 6,8 % were not oriented.

36.8 % of questioned gave preference to Erdoghan's Justice and
Development party (AKP), 21 % - to the Republican People's party
(CHP), 10,1 % to the alliance of Democrat Party formerly the True
Path Party and Motherland Party (ANAVATAN)" and 10,1% to Nationalist
Movement Party (MHP).

Abdullah Gul's nomination as candidate for the presidency and
as a result of it the crisis in Turkey contribute to Justice and
Development party's increasing popularity and recruitment of new
members, i.e. on May 30 ten popular political figures recruited to
the party, one of them was the former General Secretary of Republican
People's party. And the efforts of President Sezer to unite the
parties of the same ideological trend became in vain.

The elections in Turkey gained the former US Ambassador in Turkey
Morton Abramovich's attraction and he published his article titled
"The secular part of Turkey is divided up".

Though Abramovich warned about the results of the interference of
the army, which would end the process of the membership of Turkey to
European Union and would deepen the public polarization in Turkey,
he, anyhow, for the seculars considered preferable the army but not
Erdoghan's party. "Will the army let Justice and Development party
control the parliament and elect a president in Turkey?"

With this equivocal sentence Abramovich shows the attitudes of the
Jewish institutions of USA and "The New Conservatives" of Israel. The
Department of State also prefers Turkish army, as McCormack has
announced that the army of Turkey is the US ally.

Time will show if it is an invitation card to Turkish Army or not.

But Abramovich's concern about the probable victory of Erdoghan's
Justice and Development party confirm the probability of it.

PAN-ISLAMISTS ARE LESSER OF EVILS FOR ARMENIA, HOWEVER PAN-TURKISTS WILL WIN ELECTIONS IN TURKEY

PanARMENIAN.Net
11.06.2007 15:38 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ "Both pan-Islamists and pan-Turkists are similarly
bad for Armenia," political scientist Levon Melik-Shahnazaryan
stated to a press conference in Yerevan. He said, during the coming
parliamentarian election in Turkey the main struggle will flare up
just between these two streams. "The General Staff of the army and
kemalists represent the pan-Turkist direction, which currently is in
opposition. And Prime Minister Recep Erdogan's Justice and Development
(AKP) party represents the pan-Islamism motion.

Pan-Islamists are lesser of evils for Armenia.

However, pan-Turkists will win the elections in Turkey," the Armenian
political scientist underscored.
