{"id":188,"date":"2007-03-06T02:41:49","date_gmt":"2007-03-06T02:41:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1\/wordpress117\/?p=188"},"modified":"2012-08-18T18:56:55","modified_gmt":"2012-08-18T18:56:55","slug":"armenian-nationalist-denied-u-s-visa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hayary.org\/wph\/?p=188&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Armenian nationalist Denied U.S. Visa"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"justify\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Armenian nationalist Denied U.S. Visa<br \/>\nBy <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Emil Danielyan<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The U.S. consulate in <\/span><a title=\"Yerevan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hayary.org\/index.php?title=Yerevan\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: small;\">Yerevan<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> has refused to grant a visa to an Armenian ultranationalist politician who spent two months in prison last year for making anti-Semitic statements, it emerged on Thursday. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Armen Avetisian, the leader of a small party called the Armenian Aryan Union (HAM), cited a consulate official as telling him on Tuesday that he can not visit the United States because \u201cwe don\u2019t want you to say things in the USA which you say in your country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Avetisian was arrested in January 2005 and given a suspended three-year prison sentence by a Yerevan court two months later for a series of media interviews in which he branded Jews as enemies of Armenia and called for their expulsion from the country. The leaders of Armenia\u2019s small <\/span><a title=\"Jewish\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hayary.org\/index.php?title=Jewish\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: small;\">Jewish<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> community had for months protested against his anti-Semitic discourse. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The radical politician was prosecuted shortly after the release of the <\/span><a class=\"new\" title=\"U.S. State Department\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hayary.org\/index.php?title=U.S._State_Department&amp;action=edit\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: small;\">U.S. State Department<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2019s annual global report on anti-Semitism that made a reference to his xenophobic remarks. He has not publicly made such statements since his release from jail. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In a written statement, the HAM leadership said Avetisian planned to visit the United States to give \u201clectures\u201d to members of the Armenian-American community on Armenian \u201cnational ideology and history.\u201d It expressed \u201cbewilderment\u201d at the rejection of his visa application, arguing that Avetisian had already been allowed to visit the U.S. last August, just six months after the end of his trial. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The statement said that at the U.S. consulate Avetisian answered virtually the same questions which he had been asked during his previous visa interview. It said on both occasions consulate officials wondered what he thinks of the Jews and why he was prosecuted. They also asked why Avetisian never made good on his repeated pledges to publicize a list of Armenian government officials who he claims are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span class=\"clear\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">homosexuals<\/span><\/span>, according to the statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cWe are more than convinced that this rejection is politically motivated and does not befit the rulers of a country which considers itself a superpower,\u201d the HAM leaders said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Avetisian is not the first Armenian ultranationalist denied entry into the U.S. in recent months. Igor Muradian, a former leader of the 1988 movement for <\/span><a title=\"Karabakh\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hayary.org\/index.php?title=Karabakh\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: small;\">Karabakh<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2019s reunification with Armenian, similarly failed to get a U.S. visa earlier this year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Muradian blamed the <\/span><a title=\"Armenian Assembly of America\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hayary.org\/index.php?title=Armenian_Assembly_of_America\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: small;\">Armenian Assembly of America<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, an influential lobbying organization which has had uneasy relations with Diaspora Armenian nationalist circles, for the rejection.
